Your school, workplace, or local friendly business is
invited to support the Epilepsy Queensland campaign to raise funds to help
continue our important services. The Little Poss Appeal is also
aimed at increasing awareness of epilepsy in the community.
As many as 80,000 Queenslanders have epilepsy.
There are more people with epilepsy than with muscular dystrophy,
cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease, and several
other disorders combined. Many more people in our community are
affected, such as family members, friends, employers, workmates, or
carers. They include people you know and come into contact within
your daily life.
Almost seven out of ten people with epilepsy are
diagnosed during their school years. As a result, epilepsy
Queensland devotes considerable resources to children's programs.
A program has been designed by Epilepsy Queensland specifically to help
children to understand epilepsy. Within this program we have
published books based on a character called Little Poss (our
mascot). Poss helps young children know how to be a friend to
someone with epilepsy, what epilepsy is (and is not), and how to help
someone who is having a seizure. There is also the Little Poss
Club. Members of this club receive a monthly newsletter, a
membership pack, and other benefits. Picnics in the Park, which
are for children with epilepsy and their siblings, are also part of this
program.
Another important feature of our Children's Program
is our work in schools and childcare facilities. We provide
information for teachers, guidance for parents, and classroom talks for
students in which we discuss feelings about epilepsy and issues like
teasing and bullying as well as seizure management.
Since 1969 Epilepsy Queensland has been devoted to
maximising the quality of life of people affected by epilepsy.
This is achieved by providing information, support, and education for
people with epilepsy, their families, allied health workers, teachers
and employers.
The Little Poss Appeal 2006 will involve the sale of
'lights on keyrings' (in keeping with our slogan 'bring epilepsy out of
the shadows'), funky pens, mini pens for your mobile phone or diary
(anywhere!), and awareness wristbands in white or black. Each order comes with a counter display box. In
addition, you can order promotional posters. There is no cost to
you. Banking details and information about the return of any left
over stock will be included in your order.
Support us by faxing or emailing
an order to Epilepsy Queensland Inc. (coming soon)
Every item sold helps
provide services and also increases community awareness, both of which
are of enormous benefit to people with epilepsy.
You may prefer to simply make a donation. You
can do this by phoning us on 07 3435
5000 or 1300 852 853 (outside Brisbane), or mailing us your cheque or
credit card details to PO Box 1457, Coorparoo BC, 4151.
A Gold Coin Donation Day or Theme Day at your work
or school is another great way to raise funds for Epilepsy
Queensland. These are easy to organise and can be a lot of fun at
the same time. If you would like more information please contact
our office.
Epilepsy Queensland thanks you for your support and
looks forward to your participation this year.
