Many young children have epilepsy. It can be confusing and frightening
for them, and for other children who are around them - brothers and
sisters, playmates and friends in school. Adults sometimes find it difficult
to explain to them - just what a seizure is, why they need to take medication
for it, and how best to help.
Epilepsy Queensland Inc has solved this problem with two wonderful
books for very young children about a baby possum called "Little Poss"
who has epilepsy. As well as the books, children can become members
of the Little Poss Club, and receive regular newsletters. They can write
a letter to Little Poss, and even invite him and his friend Ruby Rosella
to visit their school or club.

| Description: |
This large picture story book looks at the feelings of a baby possum
when he is told he has epilepsy. He feels frightened and sad, because
he thinks he is different to the other possums. He has an EEG, and a
chat with a nice neurologist, who gives him some tablets for it. His
friend Ruby Rosella, helps him to realise we are all different, and
that life can still be full of fun. This book has beautiful, full colour
illustrations, as well as pages of fun, creative ideas for activities
to help children understand the story. |

school, along with his friends, Ruby Rosella, Gertie Goanna and Kerrie
Koala. Poss has epilepsy and Gertie has asthma. When Poss has a "shaking
and falling" seizure at school, his friends show just how to help him.
With simple words and delightful illustrations, the book covers the
issues of first aid, medication, and being friends. There are also three
pages of related activities for children. A must for any young children

More than 70,00 people in Queensland have epilepsy. All have their
own stories about what it is like, what problems it causes, and how
they deal with them. This book contains the stories of about thirty
of those people. In their own words, real people with epilepsy, honestly
describe real problems with diagnosis, doctors, medications, employment,
family, and other issues which have confronted them. They also discuss
ways they have learnt to cope with their condition, and even some of
the positive aspects of being a person with epilepsy. The book is in
sections, and includes stories from teenagers, young adults, middle-aged
people, and the elderly. Problems specific to each age group are also
discussed, such as employment, independence, driving, travel, relationships,
and legal issues. |

Hugo Weaving. All five are positive, successful people. They have all experienced
some problems with their condition, but on the whole have been able to overcome
them. They talk openly, positively and with humour, about their epilepsy,
and the way it affects their lives, and how they have learned to accept and

What is epilepsy, why do I have it, what effect will it have on my life?
Can I still go out with friends to nightclubs, can I drink, does it mean
I won't be able to drive? What about dating? Will it affect my sexuality
and can I still have kids one day? Does it mean I can't go to university,
or get the kind of job I've always wanted? All these questions, as well as
helpful tips on ways of managing their epilepsy are included in an easy to
understand, encouraging, and user friendly format.
This interactive CD Rom is for young people with epilepsy, or with
an interest in epilepsy. The program looks at what epilepsy is, and
what young people with epilepsy need to know.

How up to date is your staff on epilepsy knowledge? Anyone who works
in the area of health and disability, with the intellectually disabled,
in education at any level, or with the public, needs to be informed.
Epilepsy Queensland Inc has a number of educational services, and is
happy to discuss your specific needs.
We run a monthly workshop for health, disability, education and support
workers. This is a two hour class, at which participants learn what
epilepsy is, the new classification of seizure types, how to recognize
all seizure types, appropriate first aid, dealing with Status Epilepticus,
medication and recognizing when there is a problem with it, trigger
factors and how to reduce them, and general lifestyle and safety issues.
At the end of the session, participants get a certificate. Excellent
value, at only $15.
We can also visit your workplace, and do a staff in-service. This
would be tailored to suit the needs of your staff, but could include
issues such as learning and behavioural problems, employment, epilepsy
in children, epilepsy in the elderly, psycho-social problems, etc. Call
EQI for further details
It is vital that teachers have a good understanding of the problems
that epilepsy can cause. Epilepsy Queensland Inc can visit your school
to talk with teachers, or with the children.
